Effective, evidenced-based nutrition education and physical activity classes are aligned with policy, systems and environmental change strategies to create long lasting community change.

CFHL, UCCE Shasta County Offers Services in Summer Camps
CalFresh Healthy Living, UCCE Shasta County continued to support the Redding Parks & Recreation Summer Camps this summer serving in total approximately 130 students. This is an annual summer camp program which CFHL, UCCE has been implementing for over 5 years. Typical delivery involves a mix of Physical Activity and Nutrition Lessons, as well as Garden Education with the FARM Camp. While following specific ANR and CDC safety guidelines and procedures, staff this year delivered successful CATCH PA lessons with students from four different summer camps. Students enrolled through Shasta Union High School District Farm received garden specific education. It was successful in both collaboration and programming despite COVID-19 restrictions.
“Careful planning and procedures were considered to bring this programming to fruition and make it safe. The families in our community most often include working parents, so in these times where essential workers were needed and childcare is unavailable, we were very happy we could come together and make summer camps still happen for the kids, as well as provide them with physical activity that was so desperately needed after months of a shelter-in-place order.”
-Shawnice Sellers, CFHL, UCCE Shasta County Community Education Supervisor II

A Nutrition Education Program That Helps Families Make Healthful Choices
People who are most "food insecure"--those unable to use traditional means for acquiring and managing their family food supply--are at greater risk for obesity and poor health. That fact, confirmed by a recent UC study, is one reason that poor health is more common among low-income and minority populations. Obesity is not just a matter of personal health. It is a costly and deadly public health concern that affects economic productivity and state budgets as well as personal and family well-being.
